Cats are commonplace in many households and certain folks are even obsessive about the animal, collecting both memorabilia and the animals themselves. The domesticated cat is the most common pet in the USA. The history of cats is somewhat difficult to trace, due to the skeletons of wild cats being very similar to the domestic version. Nevertheless, there is evidence pointing to cats being kept as pets for at least 12,000 years.
Cats originally were extremely wild and not good pets. In 1983 on the Greek island of Cyprus, the jawbone of a cat was found. It was dated at approximately 8,000 years earlier. This led scientists to believe that those were domesticated pets, as it is unlikely they would have brought over the wild, feral version of the animal on a boat.
Slightly over twenty years later on, a grave was found, also in Cyprus, which had a cat deliberately buried with a human. This placement revealed that the animal was beneficial and most likely a pet. This was dated at about fifteen hundred years earlier than the earlier find.
With the advent of advanced DNA analysis, scientists have been able to determine that all cats descended from the same species of animal in the Middle East. Since the taming of these animals started in the Near East, these researchers feel that this began about 12,000 years ago. They feel this corresponds with the end of the nomadic existence of early humans and the start of agricultural cultures.
It was very likely that early cats were used to manage the population of rodents that accompanies the storage of grain. It is speculated that cats probably welcomed domestication because of the ready source of meals from associating with humans. Over the years specific cats were bred for particular traits, producing a number of breeds of the animals. This produced the kitties we know and love today.
